Meinl Percussion Cajon, Natural

Cajon is defined as a large box or crate in the Spanish language. It also refers to a wooden box which has been used in Cuba and other parts of the world as a percussion instrument. Cuba is in North America and is the largest island in the Caribbean Sea, which at its closest geographical location, is 90 miles south from the United States. Cuba has a rich musical heritage that includes the use of percussion instruments as described below.

The cajon box drum used in Cuba was originally used for commercial packaging, such as to pack cod fish and candles. What, you may ask, boxes that were used to carry fish and candles were also used as drums? Yes.

These box drums have a history of being the poor person’s drum in Cuba, as the wooden boxes used for packaging have been used to reproduce the sound of drums, by striking the wooden box with both hands. The drum box has also been used in impromptu situations in Cuba to make and enjoy music. In fact, Cuba has at times been referred to as the island of music.

Unlike the timbales, which is a true Cuban original, the cajon was introduced to Cuba. Historically, going back to a very dark time in Cuba, when African slaves were taken to Cuba centuries ago, it is believed that it was them, the African slaves, who were the ones who transformed the wooden boxes used for packaging, to box drums. Thus, even during this egregiously inhumane period in Cuba’s history, it is believed that music was sought to enrich the spirit, as it was part of the African culture brought to Cuba by the slaves.  It is noteworthy to emphasize that the slaves being the economically poorest of the poor found a way to play their music with the box drums.

Cuba, as mentioned above,  has at times been referred to as the island of music, having a long musical history as well as a  rich musical folklore. The rumba is a style of song and dance, of African-Spanish origin, with a strong African rhythmic influence.  The rumba has been assimilated into Cuba’s musical heritage. In fact, it is believed that the rumba was traditionally played on a box drum. Additionally, the drum box has provided accompaniment to singers who sang rumbas and other styles of music.

Fast Forwarding To The Modern Day Cajon

The modern cajon drum is used today in different styles of music, including Flamenco, Samba, Rock, Blues, and Hip Hop, among other genres of music worldwide. This  instrument has evolved to the point of being manufactured specifically as a percussion instrument.  Different styles, models, and sizes of  the box drum are  available for purchase, to be played and enjoyed.

Options of the box drum available in the marketplace include the following: the Meinl Cajon, the Conga Cajon, and the Bongo Cajon, among other options available to consumers for their musical enjoyment.

Indeed, the cajon, similar to the bata drums and the congas, have evolved significantly since first used over a century ago by very resourceful poor slaves to make music in Cuba and other parts of the world. Who would have thought that the idea of using cod fish boxes and candle boxes as drums would result centuries later in the modern day cajon drum being used in different genres of music all over the world?

We hope the information and links provided  by CubaUncensored.com to purchase cajon drums below list price at a very reputable and reliable online store has been helpful to you.  Enjoy.
